Three Key Components of Self Help Group Model
The "Three-Legged Pot" Metaphor (Visual & Cultural)
The metaphor of the three-legged pot powerfully illustrates the foundation of our Self-Help Group (SHG) model. Just as a traditional African pot requires all three legs to stand firm, balanced, and functional, true community empowerment requires these three interconnected pillars to achieve lasting impact. Remove one leg, and the entire structure collapses, preventing sustained progress.
First Leg
Social Empowerment (The First Leg):
Before money comes trust. We build strong social capital by fostering unity, mutual support, and conflict resolution within the group. This leg restores dignity and creates a safety net where members care for one another.
Second Leg
Economic Empowerment (The Second Leg):
Once the social bond is strong, the group begins saving and lending their own money. This internal banking system fuels small businesses, improves household income, and breaks the cycle of dependency on external lenders.
Phase Three
Political/Advocacy Empowerment (The Third Leg):
A financially stable and united group gains a voice. This leg empowers women to engage with local leaders, demand services, and advocate for their rights, transforming them from passive beneficiaries into active citizens.
Why the Three Legs Matter:
Ensuring Lasting Transformation

1
If the Social Leg is Missing:
The Pot Falls Apart: Without strong social bonds, trust, and mutual support, any economic gains can quickly lead to jealousy, conflict, and fragmentation within the group. People won't collaborate effectively, share resources, or build the collective strength needed to overcome challenges. Individual success might occur, but community-wide transformation remains elusive, and vulnerability persists. The dignity we aim to restore would be undermined by internal strife.
2
If the Economic Leg is Missing:
The Pot Has No Fuel: While social cohesion and a collective voice are vital, without economic empowerment, the community lacks the practical resources to solve its pressing problems. Good intentions cannot pay for education, healthcare, or essential business inputs. The ability to save, access capital, and generate income is the engine that drives tangible improvements in living standards, enabling families to move beyond mere survival and invest in their future.
3
If the Political & Advocacy Leg is Missing:
The Pot is Ignored: A socially cohesive and economically stable community still faces external barriers. Without the ability to collectively advocate for their rights, access public services, and influence local decision-makers, they remain vulnerable to systemic injustices and neglect. Their successes might be localized, but the broader environment might not shift to support their growth. This leg ensures their hard-won progress is recognized, protected, and integrated into wider development.
